Believe it or not, school does not take up most of the average kid’s waking time. Between afterschool hours, holidays and weekends, there is a lot of time left unstructured. Which could be a great thing or a disaster waiting to happen. It all depends on how that time is used. Our afterschool programs make that time productive and an opportunity for further development. The programs, in local communities all over the country, offer fun activities, pizza and prizes, casual study time, and a chance to hang out in a warm environment with friends and mentors.
The feedback we get on these programs is overwhelmingly positive, with parents telling us that their children wait all day for them. In the non-judgmental, open atmosphere, children gain important lessons almost, it seems, by osmosis. Under the guidance of carefully selected volunteer staff, these programs provide an essential place for children and teens to chill during those otherwise-unsupervised afterschool hours.
No two people learn in exactly the same way. For some kids, the traditional format of learning in school and the classroom setting sets them up for failure. Lost during the lesson and unable to catch up, they are lost in a cycle of failure. Our Book Buddies program partners such students with personal tutors to guide them to success in school. Afterschool or on the weekend, this extra time studying with a Book Buddy has proven to be the help that many children need to keep them motivated and doing well in school.
